Degree Requirements

The BIMS Academic Progress and Achievement Committee (BAPAC) provides institutional oversight for BIMS-affiliated degree-granting programs. BAPAC policies and procedures may be reviewed here.

First Year

Students complete three lab rotations, BIMS core course work, required Pharmacology course work, and electives. In February of the first year, students will choose a mentor and declare a degree department. Recommended Registration:

Fall – 12 credits
BIMS 6000 – Integrative Biosciences (10 cr)
BIMS 8995 – Topical Research (2 cr)

Spring – 12 credits
BIMS 7100 – Research Ethics (1 cr)*
BIMS 8380 – Basics of Study Design and Practical Statistics (2 cr)
PHY 8040 – Physiology A (2 cr)
PHY 8041 – Physiology B (2 cr)
Elective 1 – (2 cr)
Elective 2 – (2 cr)
BIMS 8995 – Topical Research (1 cr)

Second Year

Students complete required course work and the Advancement to Candidacy Exam. Recommended Registration:

Fall – 12 credits
PHAR 7010 – Seminar in Pharmacology (1 cr)
PHAR 8110 – Pharmacology Literature (1 cr)
PHAR 9001 – Principles of Pharmacology I (2 cr)
PHAR 9002 – Principles of Pharmacology II (2 cr)
PHAR 9400 – Grant Writing in the Pharmacological Sciences (2 cr)
PHAR 9999 – Non-topical Research (4 cr)

Spring – 12 credits
PHAR 7020 – Seminar in Pharmacology (1 cr)
PHAR 8120 – Pharmacology Literature (1 cr)
PHAR 9999 – Non-topical Research (10 cr)

Advancement to Candidacy Exam applications are due by December 1 of the Fall semester. Exams must be completed by April 15 of the Spring semester. See more detail on the Advancement to Candidacy Exam here.

Students will also complete the annual IDP form.

Third Year and Beyond

Students concentrate on independent research under the guidance of a mentor and dissertation committee.

Expectations
Documented committee meetings in January and July each year.
– Complete the annual IDP form.
– Publication of a first author paper in a recognized, peer-reviewed journal.
– Written dissertation, public seminar, and private oral defense of doctoral research.
– Complete training and earn the PhD in Pharmacology in four or five years.

Registration (every semester) – 12 credits*
PHAR 7010 – Seminar in Pharmacology (1 cr)
PHAR 8110 – Pharmacology Literature (1 cr)
PHAR 9999 – Non-topical Research (10 cr)

*Research Ethics must be repeated every four years. Most students will take this again in the spring of their 5th year.
