May 5, 2015 by zrb8mf@virginia.edu

Norbert Leitinger, PhD, has accepted an appointment as Associate Director of the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center. CVRC Director Gary Owens shared the news with School of Medicine employees:

“As you know, Norbert is an internationally renowned vascular immunologist and lipid chemist who has made key contributions to our understanding of the biological effects of lipid oxidation products including in activation of macrophages, endothelial cells, and other cell types in the setting of diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, and wound repair. As a former resident member of the CVRC, and a long term mentor on our NIH Cardiovascular Training Grant, he is very familiar with the goals and missions of the Center. His primary role will be to assist me in promoting integration of Cardiovascular Research throughout the University including basic, translational, and clinical research. He will also help to identify areas of strength and need where strategic investments in hiring new faculty would make us competitive for large NIH program grants as well as industry alliances like we have with AstraZeneca. He will also help me in managing our AstraZeneca Alliance which has evolved to include a major focus on obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disease. Please join me in welcoming Norbert to this new position.”
