April 9, 2015 by zrb8mf@virginia.edu

Congratulations to Yiqing Wang, a Class of 2016 undergraduate majoring Chemistry, who received a 2015 Harrison Undergraduate Research Award!  This prestigious award program funds approximately 40 awards of up to $3,000 each per year to support outstanding undergraduate research projects. Yiqing has been an active member of Julius Zhu’s laboratory for about one and half years and she co-authored a recent article in Nature Protocols (DOI: 10.1038/nprot.2015.019).  The article describes an optogenetics- and imaging-assisted patch-clamp technology for decoding complex neural circuits, which has already attracted some media attention (http://www.nature.com/nprot/journal/v10/n3/nprot.2015.019/metrics).  In her Harrison project, Yiqing plans to use this newly developed technology to decipher the cortical chandelier neuronal circuitry, which has been implicated in epilepsy and schizophrenia. Way to go, Yiqing!
