Marin Healy – 2015 Outstanding Grad Student

March 25, 2015 by zrb8mf@virginia.edu

Congratulations to Marin Healy, Pharmacology PhD Candidate in Kyle Hoehn’s lab, who was selected to receive the 2015 Outstanding Graduate Student Award! The Pharmacology Graduate Committee received a number of extremely qualified applications this year and it was a difficult decision to make – but this is a good problem to have! As the recipient of this award, Marin will receive a $500 cash prize and was nominated for the Peach and Hungerford Awards, which will be announced in April.

Marin was commended by her nominators for many things, including:

  • developing an impactful and complex research project;
  • being “a team player and a tremendous lab citizen” (both in the Hoehn lab and in the way she assists and trains others);
  • contributing to the projects of others, even when there’s no benefit to her research to do so;
  • for “handling setbacks, disappointments, critiques, and challenges win incredible aplomb”;
  • her impressive publication record, which includes a first author publication in the Journal of Hepatology along with three co-author pubs, and is expected to soon include 2 more first author publications and 3 more co-author publications;
  • her volunteer work in the community, where she serves both as a mentor to undergraduate University students to help them succeed in college and as a leader for youth sports camps;

Her nominators described her as ranking “in the top 1% of trainees,” as having the “unique combinations of talent, commitment, and maturity [that] will guarantee high levels of success at the postdoctoral level and beyond,” as “intelligent, energetic and highly motivated” with a “commitment to science and an overall zeal for life.”

Please congratulate Marin when you see her. And join us at the GBS Symposium on Thursday, April 16th to see her receive this Award (and find out if she also receives the Peach or Hungerford Award – we certainly hope she does)! Awards will be presented at 5:00 p.m., following the Key Note lecture at 4:00.
